Most small business owners in Phoenix did not start a company to become marketers. That is understandable, and it also means a handful of avoidable mistakes show up again and again. Here are five of the most common, with practical fixes.
Mistake 1: Spreading the budget too thin
When you try a little of everything, such as social media, direct mail, a directory, a few ads, and an SEO package, nothing gets enough investment to work, and you cannot tell what is helping. It is common to see small budgets divided across six or seven channels, each too small to produce reliable data.
The fix: Choose one or two channels where your customers actively look for what you sell, usually Google search and the Map Pack for local service businesses, and fund them properly. Add another only after the first is producing results you can measure.
Mistake 2: Neglecting your Google Business Profile
For many local businesses, the profile is the first thing a customer sees. Outdated hours, missing services, a handful of old photos, and unanswered reviews quietly send customers to competitors.
The fix: Set a monthly routine. Check hours (including holidays), add new photos, update services, and post occasional updates. Reply to every review within a couple of days, thanking happy customers and responding calmly and specifically to critical ones. Our guide on Map Pack ranking covers what to check.
Mistake 3: Not tracking where leads come from
If you cannot say which channel produced last month's calls, you cannot decide where to spend next month's budget. Many businesses track only form submissions and miss the phone calls that make up most of their leads.
The fix: Set up call tracking, form tracking, and a simple way to ask every new customer how they found you. Attribute leads to specific channels: organic search, Map Pack, paid ads, referrals. Even an imperfect system is better than none.
Mistake 4: Judging results by vanity metrics
Followers, impressions, and page views feel like progress. They are not revenue. A report full of rising impressions can sit alongside flat sales.
The fix: Anchor every report to leads, cost per lead, booked jobs, and revenue. Treat traffic and rankings as supporting information. If an agency or freelancer cannot connect their work to those numbers, ask why.
Mistake 5: Sending traffic to a website that does not convert
Paying for ads or SEO and then sending visitors to a slow, confusing site wastes the investment. Hidden phone numbers, long forms, and unclear offers all cost you leads.
The fix: Before increasing traffic, make sure the site loads quickly on mobile, shows a clickable phone number, has a short form, and tells visitors exactly what to do next. We explain how in our guide to converting website visitors.
A simple way to start
You do not need to fix everything at once. Start with tracking, so you can see what is working. Then clean up your Google Business Profile and your website's main conversion path. Once those are in place, put your budget behind the channel that shows the best return. An outside review can speed this up, and you can read more about how we work on our about page.
